With nominations in major political parties set to begin in the next few days, we are informed that a number of politicians with influential positions in their respective parties are lobbying for their relatives and friends to be given direct nomination to save them the headache of facing scrutiny by voters this early in the game. Once such prominent political family has already lined up a number of aspirants for various posts in the general election and is presently trying to use its influence and power to secure nomination certificates for the aspirants and then bank on party wave to win come the elections.

A mayor who is also a parliamentary aspirant from Kiambu County who three years ago clandestinely sold a parcel of land set aside for a municipal market to an unsuspecting buyer has been forced to refund Sh300,000 he had received. The repayment was made under duress after the buyer realized he had been conned and threatened to expose the civic father. The mayor, afraid that his political ambitions would be hampered if he was found to lack integrity, readily agreed to repay the money through three installments of Sh100,000 cash each. The mayor is not yet out of trouble as several other people whom he had sold the same plot are now lining up to get their money back or else they expose his scam.

Things are not at all going well for Roads minister Frankline Bett. He is under great pressure to ensure that the construction of the Total-Kericho-Awasi roadis completed on schedule and bring an end to the pain motorists plying the route are facing. Vehicles plying the route are being asked to pay some amount to a security firm associated with a South Rift politician to be allowed to avoid the diversion and use the yet to be completed road. The contractor is also under pressure to use only material from quarries owned by some powerful individuals, including some of Bett's Cabinet colleagues!
