Corridors of Power

Even after joint nominations, some Cord affiliate parties issued members who lost in the party primaries with certificates. In Embakasi East, Ford Kenya issued a certificate to a member, allowing him to contest in the general election. This has left Cord supporters wondering what the 'unity' is all about since, come March 4, Cord will have several members running against each other. They now say it would be an advantage for TNA if Cord's top brass does not ensure all its parties are united.

For lack of an excuse for performing poorly in the ODM nominations, Steve Mwanga, an aspirant for the Ugenya parliamentary seat, resorted to intimidating journalists whom he accused of orchestrating his downfall. He ranted at the scribes accusing them of writing false stories about the outcome of the nominations. David Ouma won with over 7,000 votes while Mwanga managed 1,752, which placed him fourth according to results announced by the ODM National Elections Board returning officer Goddard Ambale. Mwanga, known for his deep pockets, warned a group of journalists that he would use his resources to deal with them.

Nairobi governor aspirant Philip Kisia who decamped to the Federal Party of Kenya on the eve of the nominations resisted pleas by a personal assistant to one of the leading presidential contenders who wanted him to join UDF instead. The personal assistant was tasked to entice Kisia out of parties in the Cord coalition with promises of campaign funds. The last of those calls came as Kisia was being received by FPK officials who advised him to ignore it.

Some losers in Murang'a County TNA nominations were overheard complaining that officials of an NGO used their resources and reach to mobilise voters for their rivals, who all won. The organisation, our sources said, mobilised people from villages to come for jigger treatment which was conditional upon voting for the particular aspirants.
