Corridors of Power

THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
HEADS are expected to roll at the UDF party secretariat following the defection of Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal to the Wiper party. Until his defection, Shahbal was expected to be the party's gubernatorial candidate until some party officials decided to deliberately omit his name from the list of party members submitted to the IEBC. Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi was so angered by the subterfuge that he is now promising to crack the whip and get rid of all party saboteurs.

The fall out over the party nominations continues. Members of two prominent families are bitter that after forking out a chunk of moolah—estimated to be Sh20 million— into the campaign coffers of a leading politician in the Jubilee Alliance, he failed to 'influence' the nomination of some members of their families. The man, known for his very vocal pronouncements has become MIA (missing in action) and mteja whenever the families try to get him to demand their money back.

An ODM politician in Nairobi surprised everyone when he handed a spectator in a crowd the nomination certificate to run as the Umoja county representative. The politician had been given the certificates to hand out to all those who had won the nominations. But instead of doing so, he decided to hand the certificate to a woman who was only in the crowd and who had no interest at all in contesting for the seat. The rightful winner was left astounded as the man casually handed over the certificate to the bemused woman. This happened the same day when the winner of the Makongeni Ward County rep was stabbed when he went to collect his certificate from the home of a rival contestant whom he had floored in the nominations!

After being denied the ODM nomination for Siaya gubernatorial seat,  word has it that some Siaya residents are planning to endorse Oburu Odinga to be chair the Luo Council of elders. They say Oburu should simply quit elective politics and concentrate on family business. They believe that Oburu will have a rough time in politics if recent events that have happened in the county are anything to go by.
