Five New Zealand nationals die in Vihiga accident

By Eric Lungai
VIHIGA, KENYA:  Five New Zealand citizens and a Kenyan died on Monday after they were involved in a grisly road accident along the Majengo-Luanda road in Vihiga County.
The foreigners died while undergoing treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu. The Kenyan who died was the driver of the vehicle.
The five were in Kenya following up on a sponsorship they offered to a primary school called Ark Quest Educational Centre in Vihiga County.
Police say at the time of the accident, fifteen people were in the van coming from the primary school and were going for a private picnic.
“It was raining and there was poor visibility on the road. When the driver reached the spot, he lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road before rolling several times,” an eye- witness told The Standard.
The foreign visitors had come to the educational centre a week ago to assess the progress it had made.
Vihiga OCPD Mr. Lawrence Karama confirmed the incident and urged drivers to be more careful on the roads to prevent such costly losses.
“Drivers should be more careful on the roads because at the end of the day life counts more than anything else. Police will implement the law to the later to ensure that discipline is maintained on the roads at all times,” said Karama.
