Form three student commits suicide inside police cell

By Nick Oluoch
Migori; Kenya: A form three student accused of stealing a sack of tobacco leaves has committed suicide inside Giribe Police Station cells in Migori county.
Police have launched investigation into the incident.
The boy, who was a student at Magongo-Ribe Secondary School, is believed to have been arrested on Thursday midday on suspicion that he had stolen leaves belonging to his uncle.
According to police officers from the station, it was the uncle who called the police to report that the boy had stolen his dried tobacco leaves from a store.
“We then went over and brought him to the police post,” the officer said adding that the boy was then locked up at the cells.
He then informed the police that he was with a friend during the incident and so the police decided to lock him up at the cell before going for the other suspect
However, when they came back after about half an hour, they found the suspect dangling from the rafters of the cell.
Migori OCPD Alfred Makoma confirmed the incident saying the body had been moved to St Joseph Ombo Hospital mortuary.
