Kapondi denies claims that he was Ruto accomplice

By Daniel Psirmoi
Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi (pictured) has refuted International Criminal Court (ICC) claim he played a role in the 2007/2008 post-election violence.
The lawmaker was mentioned by the ICC as an accomplice of Eldoret North MP William Ruto, alongside former retired army commander Augustine Cheruiyot and former GSU Commandant Samson Cheramboss.
He is alleged to have supplied guns to Ruto in the charge sheet. In an interview with The Standard, Mr Kapondi dismissed the claims that he supplied arms, terming them as false, mischievous and malicious.
He argued that during the mentioned period he was in remand at the Bungoma and Kakamega GK prisons facing trumped up charges of murder, promoting war like activities in Mt Elgon constituency and administering oaths to Sabaot Land Defence Force militiamen, crimes he was acquitted off.
“I am stunned the ICC believes the falsehoods it was fed with by some activists to the effect that I supplied 3,000 guns that were used in the violence. I was behind prison walls under tight security, which makes the allegations bogus,” charged Kapondi.
FAR-FETCHED
The legislator was amused with allegations that Ruto visited him several times and took him out for dinner as well as giving him a satellite phone for communication and coordination, saying this was ‘far-fetched’ and ‘the product of fertile imaginations’.
“I have never seen a satellite phone in my life, leave alone using one. William Ruto never visited me in prison; these are lies and pure fabrications,” said Kapondi.
Reacting to a story appearing in a section of the media yesterday, which implied the Kenyan Government had denied ICC access to interview him, Kapondi who is the chairman of the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security said he has never received such a request and added that he is ready to meet the prosecutor at any time.
He wondered why Fatou Bensouda has never at any one time made a request to see him directly or indirectly.
