Kiraitu’s ‘bus’ still backs Uhuru’s presidential bid

TUESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY KIRIMI MURITHI
The Alliance Party of Kenya has confirmed that they are still back Uhuru Kenyatta's presidential bid despite the collapse of talks which led to their withdrawal of his support in November last year.
Speaking during the end of year party at Kinoru stadium when they launched the party’s lineup for the Meru county seats, Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi said they will support Uhuru and we will only review that position if there is a fundamental change of political circumstances in the country.
Kiraitu said the party is not part of any coalition in the country and will go it alone in the next general elections and will field candidates in all other seats apart from that of the president.
“We are not part of CORD, jubilee or pambazuka or any that will be formed, we will go to the next general elections as an independent party. We are still with Uhuru Kenyatta and what we don’t want is support a presidential candidate who will propagate for the dissolution of the Bus party”, he said.
He added that they will create an opportunity for Uhuru to confirm that indeed his agenda and that of the bus is the same and he will protect the interest of the Meru community.
He also disputed allegations that APK is a tribal party and said all other political parties have their regional strongholds just like theirs has its stronghold in Mt. Kenya East region.
“The bus has new tires and enough fuel to win the 2013 general elections. The days of mega parties like KANU and the Indian parties are gone. There are national parties where each has its stronghold with ODM being strong in Luo Nyanza, Ford Kenya in western, URP in Rift valley, KANU with a stronghold in Kalejin, TNA being in Central Kenya and the Bus with stronghold in Mt. Kenya East”, said Kiraitu.
“We are not promoting any tribal ideologies. We are Kenyans from the Mt. Kenya East region and we are written in the constitution which protects the diversity of the Kenyan communities”, he added.
He further said the bus party is their vehicle for them to participate in the competition for the national resources both political and economical.
While speaking at the same meeting, the party director of elections who is also the Tigania East MP Peter Munya said some of the parties that claim to be strong in the region do not have elected officials on the ground.
