MAINA NJENGA included in UHURU and MUTHAURA ICC cases




Friday January 4, 2013 - Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga has been included in the list of Kenyan suspects indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The name of the former Mungiki leader was included in the Document Containing Charges for the trial of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and former Head of Public Service ambassador Francis Muthaura.

The ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda had previously only mentioned Mungiki leaders who cooperated with Uhuru and Muthaura in the attacks in Naivasha and Nakuru.

The Trial Chamber V judges in the  Hague have  now  accepted  Uhuru and Muthaura ‘s application that Maina Njenga should be specifically mentioned as among those  contacted for the purpose of securing Mungiki services  for the Party of National Unity (PNU)  coalition.

The trial of Uhuru and Muthaura at The Hague begins in April 10 while trial of William Ruto and Joshua Sang starts on April 11.

Maina Njenga who has since joined the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) was the Mungiki leader during the 2007-08 post election violence where over 1000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.
