Wiper Democratic Movement chair David Musila and secretary general Mutula Kilonzo have stepped down as the party's leaders ahead of next week's nominations.
The move consequently suspends the two from being the signatories to the party's nomination certificates. The resignation is meant to ensure fairness in the January 17 primaries in which both Musila and Mutula are seeking the party's tickets.
Yesterday, Mutula said their resignation is aimed at removing doubts over the party's fairness during the nominations. There have been concerns that the nominations in Kitui and Makueni, where the two are seeking the party's tickets, are only a formality to endorse them.
Mutula said they voluntarily opted out to keep off the process and give their rivals a fair chance. “The party has already written to the Registrar of Political Parties to nominate new signatories who are not seeking the tickets for elective posts," he said.
The new signatories are former Health PS Sammy Mbova and Judith Sijei. Sijei, who is from the Rift Valley, is the chair of the party’s national appeals board.
“We cannot purport to promote internal democracy if officials are allowed to participate in the party primaries while overseeing the same process,” Mutula said.
Both Mutula nad Musila are eyeing their county's senator's seats. Vice President Kalozo Musyoka, Wiper's leader, has on several occasions assured party aspirants of a free and fair nominations.
