Poll: Raila, Uhuru will not win elections round one

NAIROBI, KENYA: Neither Prime Minister Raila Odinga or nor his deputy Uhuru Kenyatta would clinch presidency in the first round if elections were held today, the latest poll by Ipsos Synovate has shown.
According to the polls released on Friday, none of the two presidential candidates would garner the 50 plus one percent needed to win the presidency.
The polls indicate Raila, who is CORD presidential candidate, received an approval rate of 46 percent against Uhuru’s 40 percent. Uhuru is the Jubilee alliance flag bearer.
Amani coalition presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi had 5 percent approval rate, Peter Kenneth of Eagle alliance and Martha Karua had one percent each.
Ipsos Synovate political research analyst Tom Wolf said a re run in the presidential race is almost inevitable as the two candidates so far have below 50 percent support.
The polls further showed that Raila is popular in all provinces except Rift Valley and Central and even beats Mudavadi in Western region where Cord alliance has 46 percent popularity against Amani’s 29 percent.
Raila however has lost significant support in Rift Valley that overwhelmingly voted for him in 2007 with Cord having 22 percent against Jubilee’s 62 percent.
In Eastern province, Cord has 55 percent support against Jubilee’s 34 percent.
