Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday promised Kitui residents that Cord alliance would fast-track the extraction of minerals in the county if it won the March 4 elections.
He said the coalition wanted residents to benefit from the mining of coal, limestone and iron ore deposits discovered in the county but which have not been exploited due to what he called local politics.
The PM told a rally in Mutomo that prospective mining companies were ready to start the work once Cord assumed office.
Create jobs
“The mining plants that will be put up when the extraction starts will create jobs and improve the economy,” he said.
Mr Odinga who was on a three-day campaign tour of Ukambani, said the iron ore could be used for the construction of the proposed rail line network, which is under the Southern Corridor transport system.
He, however, faulted a local politician for frustrating mining companies that expressed interest in the exercise and assured residents that his government would remove such hurdles.
The premier announced that the alliance would open up the area by constructing the Kibwezi to Kitui road.
The Southern Corridor, whose network is expected to link the entire East African region, will traverse the region through Mwingi, Maua, Isiolo, Marsabit and to Ethiopia through Moyale.
Other projects the coalition leader promised include the construction of water pans and dams to harvest rain water for domestic use and irrigation.
Mr Odinga was accompanied by immediate former Kangundo MP Johnston Muthama and an aspirant for the Kitui gubernatorial seat, Dr Julius Malobe.
