Tuju to fly Eagle’s running mate flag

TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY KEVIN ODHIAMBO AND IBRAHIM ORUKO
KENYA National Congress leader Peter Kenneth is set to name Raphael Tuju as his running mate in the Eagle Alliance.
The two leaders gave the strongest hint yet of the impending appointment during yesterday's KNC aspirants meeting in Nairobi. The two said they will make the announcement before Friday.
Tuju's Party of Action signed a coalition agreement with KNC on December 4 to form the Eagle Alliance. Yesterday, Kenneth revealed that only him and Tuju are in the race for the alliance's ticket.
However, it was the slip of his tongue during his address to the over 1,000 aspirants for various seats that left little doubt that he will carry the alliance’s ticket.
“The Eagle's leadership is here...it will not come from anywhere else,” Kenneth told the aspirants while pointing towards Tuju.
“Before the end of the week we shall tell you who will be the running mate and unveil the alliance presidential team. We are all here. Don’t think about anybody else, we are here.”
Kenneth assured the aspirants that he is in the presidential race to the end and warned them against being deceived by their opponents.
“Anyone among you who doubts our commitment to this race must remove them because the battle has just begun. We are in this race to win,” he said.
The Gatanga MP promised to base his campaign on issues and cautioned Kenyans against being diverted from the real problems affecting them. Tuju had first hinted at the appointment when he took to the podium to address the aspirants.
The former Rarieda MP showered Kenneth with praises, describing him as a forthright and selfless leader who can be trusted to deliver if given an opportunity.
