Two Nation Media Group journalists BEATEN by GSU officers in KIBERA

Monday January 21, 2013 - Two Nation Media Group journalists received a dog’s beating on Sunday, after GSU officers found them covering riots in Kibera.

The GSU officers confiscated their cameras’ memory cards and other valuables despite the journalists identifying themselves.

Mr Dennis Okeyo, a photographer and Mr John Otanga, cameraman, were attacked at an area known as Karanja.

The two members of the fourth estate had been assigned to cover demonstrations by youths in connection with ODM nominations last week.

According to the journalists’ driver, the two arrived at the scene and they found the GSU officers ordering everybody passing by to raise their hands.

Mr Okeyo identified himself to the officers and showed them his press card.

However, the officers gave him a beating before they grabbed his camera, and destroyed the recording tape.

Mr Otanga was hit on the head by gun butt as he attempted to help his colleague. Both were rushed to Nairobi Coptic Hospital where they received first aid.

Police boss David Kimaiyo has ordered an immediate investigation of the incident.
