DEPUTY Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday said that his ongoing presidential campaign will not cost Sh10 billion.
The Jubilee Coalition presidential nominee said that a Star story on Monday that TNA would use Sh10 billion for his campaign was "false, erroneous, misleading and a misrepresentation."
"The Sh10billion claim is a fantasy and the creation of a fertile imagination. No wonder the views of the presidential campaign team were not sought. For the record, the Uhuru presidential campaign is anchored on the message of reconciliation, national unity and cohesion, transparency and economic transformation," Uhuru said in a statement from his spokesman Munyori Buku.
"It is precisely for that reason that TNA’s banner slogan is ‘I believe’, a message that underlines the creation of enormous possibilities for our beautiful land of Kenya," said Buku.
So far the various coalitions are keeping their expenditure a secret but the cost of the presidential campaigns for the March 4 elections is expected to run into billions of shillings.
In 2007, President Kibaki's PNU and Raila Odinga's ODM reportedly used a total of Sh6 billion in their campaigns in the months of November and December.
The latest campaigns have featured new four wheel-drive campaign vehicles and extensive use of helicopters.
There has also been heavy spending on mobilisation for rallies, campaign materials and operation of parties and secretariats.
TNA along with other big parties like ODM, Wiper, URP and UDF is expected to spend heavily in the next eight weeks before the March 4 election.
