Jubilee Alliance leaders Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto on Saturday took their first joint campaigns since endorsement by delegates to Nyanza to seek support from the local residents where they asked Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka to retire.
They flew to Kuria East and Kuria West districts where they addressed rallies in Kehancha and Isebania border towns.
It was at Isebania where the two leaders addressed a joint rally where they claimed that their Cord rivals were using rhetoric to dupe Kenyans.
“Ours is a coalition whose sole aim is to improve the welfare of Kenyans through job and wealth creation. We are talking about implementable policies and not propaganda to seek your support,” said Mr Kenyatta, who is also the team’s presidential candidate.
He said Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka had been in government for long “but had no positive record to talk about”.
“These two gentlemen should retire honourably with President Mwai Kibaki to leave the reigns of power  for the youthful and energetic leaders to move this country forward,” said the DPM.
Mr Kenyatta said that the VP, for instance, had been in government for close to three decades and had nothing to show for it.
“Someone like Kalonzo has been in government for close to 30 years so I wonder what new thing he wants to do for Kenyans when he goes around campaigning for their Cord alliance. Even Raila served in Moi and Kibaki governments. He is the current prime minister of the country but keeps talking of reforms. Why not institute the reforms now?” he said.
To ensure they retire comfortably, Mr Ruto, who is Uhuru’s running mate in the Jubilee coalition said, next week Parliament will pass a motion on the retirement benefits of the President, PM and VP.
Mr Ruto said this would “give the trio peaceful retirement from active politics”.
“The time for the youth to lead  is now … their tomorrow has come. I hear some of our rivals saying that one can be old but young in terms of ideas; this is political fraud,” said the Eldoret North MP.
“Going by figures released by IEBC, we have the requisite numbers and we shall win by a landslide,” Mr Ruto said.
“Cord will form the official opposition then another team (read Amani coalition of Musalia Mudavadi) will neither be in the opposition nor in government,” he said.
On a pact that was brokered by the PM that is likely to see the Kuria community bag the Senate seat while their Luo counterparts take governor, Mr Kenyatta told them to go ahead and accept the deal but give him the presidential votes.
