Uhuru, Ruto unfit to hold public office - Khalwale

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY HILTON OTENYO
IKOLOMANI MP Boni Khalwale has said Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto should be allowed to contest the presidency in the March 4 general election because of the crimes against humanity charges facing them at the ICC.
He said Kenyans are keenly awaiting the outcome of an integrity case against the two saying the constitution will guide the electoral process and the law must not be applied selectively.
Khalwale said that former deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza was sacked on the grounds of merely pinching a security guard's nose and Uhuru and Ruto should be stopped from seeking the presidency over their crimes against humanity charges.
“As leaders from Western Kenya, we are waiting see if the courts will clear the two to run for presidency. We want to know what between pinching ones nose and facing crimes against humanity is a serious crime,” he said.
Khalwale was addressing 350 UDF delegates from Kakamega County at the party offices in Kakamega. Housing Minister Soita Shitanda was present.
He said that chapter six of the constitution should not be applied selectively and told Chief Justice Willy Mutunga that Kenyans have full confidence in the reformed judiciary and are waiting the outcome of an integrity case keenly.
Civil society groups have filed a case in court seeking the judicial interpretation as to whether Uhuru and Ruto can run for the presidency while facing crimes against humanity. A similar case filed earlier by another team of activists was withdrawn.
Shitanda said that Kenyans want a peaceful elections and asked the Government to ensure maximum security during and after the elections.
Khalwale told Uhuru and Ruto to know that the next elections will not be determined by tribes but the 40 million registered Kenyan voters.
“They are day dreaming telling Kenyans that they have numbers and they will win in round one,” said Khalwale.
He said that Amani alliance presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi will win the elections. He said Mudavadi will be second position at worst.
