Who is FUNDING campaigns for both UHURU/ RUTO and RAILA/KALONZO?? The Keny

Monday, the 7th of January 2013 - With just less than two months before the country goes to the polls, the two alliances that are neck and neck in the opinion polls have traded accusations on how exactly they are funding their campaigns.

CORD and Jubilee coalitions which are fronted by Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta respectively, have each remained mum on how they intend to fund their campaigns, the cost of which, it is said, will run in the billions.

CORD threw the first verbal volley with several ODM MPs led by Public Works Minister Chris Obure asking the Jubilee alliance to tell Kenyans how they will finance their campaigns. Obure was accompanied by Trade Assistant Minister Manson Nyamweya who asked Uhuru and his running mate William Ruto to come clean;

“Let them tell Kenyans who is funding their campaigns because the public has a right to that information,” said Nyamweya.

Jubilee responded quickly to the accusations though with Kenyatta’s spokesman Munyori Buku telling off the MPs, saying they would do well to practice what they preach;
“What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Let them (Cord) also be prepared to account for every coin that they spend in their campaigns,” he said.

Munyori also added that Jubilee was not obliged to make its campaign financing public because campaign legislation had not yet been passed by parliament.

The legislation Munyori is referring to is the Elections Campaign Financing Bill which is intended to give effect to Article 88(4) (i) of the constitution and Section 4 (i) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Act.

The bill was intended to give legal effect to efforts to regulate the expenditure and accountability of political campaigns but its passage was frustrated by parliament.
